You will lead Checkr's Machine Learning Engineering team within the Data & ML organization, managing engineers across seniority levels while staying technically engaged in setting direction and driving production outcomes. The team owns three interconnected areas: core product intelligence (NLP, classification, entity resolution, model accuracy), workforce integrity (fraud detection, risk signals), and ML/agent infrastructure (evaluation systems, model lifecycle, agent orchestration).
Key responsibilities include hiring and developing ML engineers; translating company priorities into focused multi-quarter ML roadmaps; raising production engineering standards for models and agents (APIs, tests, CI/CD, observability, on-call ownership); establishing shared ML operating models for evaluation, data provenance, versioning, and monitoring; advancing core product intelligence through measurable model quality; launching new AI and fraud products in partnership with Product, Security, and go-to-market teams; guiding Checkr's transition to agentic AI systems; and operating as an executive partner explaining technical choices and risks to leadership.
You will model AI-native leadership, using AI to increase team speed and ambition while maintaining ownership of all outputs. The role reports to the Senior Director of Data & ML and is based in San Francisco, emphasizing shipping and results over process.
