Airwallex is a $11B-valued unified payments and financial platform serving 250,000+ businesses globally, including Brex, Navan, and Qantas. The Legal & Licensing team sits at the center of the company's growth strategy, balancing rapid product and revenue expansion with regulatory discipline across 27 offices worldwide.
As Senior Employment Counsel for the Americas, you will be the primary employment law advisor for Airwallex's 3,000+ employees across 20+ markets. This is a hands-on, strategic role that combines traditional employment counseling with the complex regulatory challenges unique to fintech operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Advising People & Talent and business leaders on the full employee lifecycle: hiring, contracts, performance management, accommodations, leaves, wage-and-hour compliance, and terminations
- Leading workplace investigations and sensitive employee matters end-to-end with cross-functional teams
- Drafting, refreshing, and owning employment policies and templates that scale across the organization
- Managing employment disputes, agency charges, and litigation; directing external counsel and legal spend
- Coordinating multi-jurisdiction employment advice across APAC, EMEA, and the Americas, including contractor classification, employer-of-record arrangements, and cross-border remote work risk
- Advising on compensation, benefits, and equity matters in a private company context
You'll own US employment law directly and coordinate advice across other jurisdictions with Airwallex's external counsel panel. A unique aspect of this role is navigating questions that generalist employment lawyers rarely encounter: contractor and EOR classification across borders, remote work and mobility exposure, and conduct and remuneration matters in regulated entities.
The ideal candidate has 7+ years of employment law experience at a leading law firm or in-house legal department, with demonstrated counseling expertise beyond litigation. You should have experience advising on and coordinating employment law across multiple jurisdictions, leading workplace investigations, and managing employment disputes. Fintech or regulated industry experience is strongly preferred. You excel at translating complex legal and risk issues into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal audiences, and you thrive in fast-paced, rapidly changing environments where you can operate independently and pivot quickly.
