Salary: CAD 180,200 - 233,200 / annual
Thumbtack is a home services marketplace connecting millions of homeowners with local service professionals. The Data Engineering team is organized into three groups: Core Data Engineering, Data Platform, and Embedded Data Engineering. This Senior Data Engineer role sits on the Embedded Data Engineering team within commercial operations, working alongside engineers, analysts, data scientists, and ML engineers to design and curate datasets from internal and third-party sources.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams across Thumbtack to understand their data needs and build datasets that solve real business challenges. The organization manages terabytes of data across multiple teams, each with unique requirements for cleaning, organizing, and measuring performance. Your responsibilities include refining and evangelizing a comprehensive framework for integrating data-thinking into the software development lifecycle for product teams.
Key responsibilities: Design, architect, and maintain core operations datasets, data marts, and feature stores supporting both mature products and rapidly evolving features. Partner with analytics, data science, and machine learning teams to ensure datasets are built with the same engineering rigor as production software. Integrate deeply with cross-functional partners to understand data needs and drive data quality and best practices across business areas. Help build next-generation data products leveraging AI models for code generation and incorporating agents into workflows.
Required qualifications: 4+ years designing and building datasets and data warehouses. Strong SQL expertise for analytics, reporting, business intelligence, and ETL pipeline development. Experience designing and maintaining data warehouses and data marts that integrate production databases, clickstream data, and external APIs. Proficiency with modern cloud-native data stacks (BigQuery, dbt, Apache Airflow or similar). Experience using AI to generate design plans, code, and documentation. Excellent stakeholder collaboration skills, particularly with analytics teams. Strong ownership mentality from ideation through maintenance.
