Gusto is a mission-driven company helping small business owners focus on their craft by handling payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR. The Data Engineering team builds tools and systems that make Gusto's data consistent, user-friendly, and actionable, enabling teams to make data-driven decisions and deliver intelligent, customized experiences to customers. We're seeking a Senior Data Engineer to take loosely defined problems and drive them end-to-end—from problem framing and stakeholder alignment through design, build, and delivery of durable data solutions. You'll partner closely with analytics, product, and engineering teams to deliver data solutions that drive real business and customer impact. Key responsibilities include building and maintaining robust data pipelines and ETL workflows, designing scalable data architectures, implementing data quality best practices, and optimizing performance and cost across data systems. You'll work with diverse data sources (APIs, databases, SaaS applications, event streams) and cloud platforms like Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or Databricks. The role requires hands-on dbt experience for reliable, testable, and maintainable transformations, as well as implementing CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and data observability. You'll also explore how AI and automation can enhance data engineering—building self-service tools, intelligent pipelines, and agents that automate repetitive tasks. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and communication skills are essential. AI fluency is expected as a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. Gusto has physical offices in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, with hybrid expectations of 2-3 days per week in the office. All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs).
