Salary: USD 224,995 - 264,700 / annual
Coinbase is seeking a Senior Counsel, Product to serve as the primary legal partner to product, engineering, and design teams building stablecoins, payments, and crypto infrastructure. This role is part of the Product Legal team, which provides full product life-cycle counseling across novel areas in fintech and crypto law.
You will own the legal advisory relationship for stablecoin, payments, and crypto infrastructure product teams, providing day-to-day legal, business, and strategic counsel throughout the product life cycle. Key responsibilities include advising product managers and engineers on U.S. and international regulatory requirements, including money transmission laws, the GENIUS Act, NYDFS BitLicense, banking regulations, e-money issuance, securities regulation, and BSA compliance.
You will drive resolution of novel legal issues by identifying risks, partnering with specialized colleagues across Legal, and engaging outside counsel where needed. Cross-functional collaboration is essential—you'll work with Compliance, Communications, Finance, Tax, Security, and Enterprise Risk Management to deliver cohesive legal guidance that enables product launches. You will also shape the team's approach to emerging regulatory frameworks, proactively advising product teams on how new laws and guidance affect product design, disclosures, and go-to-market strategy.
Additionally, you will build scalable legal processes and playbooks that enable product teams to move quickly while maintaining compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Required qualifications include a J.D. with 7+ years of legal experience and active U.S. state bar membership. You must have meaningful experience counseling product teams on technology product launches at a fintech, crypto/blockchain company, or consumer technology company (in-house experience preferred). Deep familiarity with major U.S. and global payments/financial services regulations is essential, along with demonstrated ability to provide risk-adjusted legal guidance in ambiguous or first-of-kind legal environments. You should have a track record of embedding with cross-functional teams and independently driving legal workstreams from problem identification through resolution. Experience with generative AI tools, used responsibly with human oversight, is valued.
