General Legal is an AI-native law firm delivering high-quality legal work faster and more predictably than traditional firms. This Senior Counsel - Employment role is for an experienced employment lawyer ready to apply deep expertise in a new way: advising startups and high-growth companies on employment law, executive compensation, and equity plans while building institutional infrastructure through templates, precedent libraries, and mentoring. You will independently handle employment law matters including federal and state compliance, hiring and onboarding, employment agreements, confidentiality and IP agreements, restrictive covenants, workplace investigations, and HR counseling. You'll design and administer equity incentive plans (stock options, RSUs, restricted stock), draft grant agreements and exercise documents, and negotiate severance arrangements. You'll provide startup-focused counseling on founder and early-team agreements, contractor classification, wage and hour compliance, multi-state and remote workforce obligations, handbook development, and immigration support. The ideal candidate has a J.D. from an accredited law school, active bar membership in good standing, and 5-8 years of focused employment law experience, ideally from a top-tier firm, leading in-house role, or regulatory agency background. You're genuinely enthusiastic about teaching and knowledge-sharing, comfortable working across experience levels, and able to translate complex employment and compensation issues into practical guidance for non-HR clients. General Legal operates like a startup: modern tooling, outcome-based pricing (not billable hours), remote-friendly work, and meaningful ownership. You'll apply expertise to questions that shape client growth, help define how AI handles routine work so your time goes to judgment and strategy, and build a track record at the leading edge of legal services innovation—without the billable hours grind or client development obligations of traditional firms. Remote with optional offices in San Francisco and New York.
