OpenAI's Legal team is seeking an experienced Senior Counsel to lead commercial legal strategy and execution across the company's infrastructure portfolio. This is a cross-functional role reporting to the Associate General Counsel for Infrastructure, partnering closely with procurement, supply chain, partnerships, finance, and product teams.
Key responsibilities include owning commercial legal strategy and risk management for infrastructure transactions; drafting, negotiating, and advising on complex agreements with infrastructure suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and technology partners; supporting strategic partnerships involving AI infrastructure and hardware supply chains; developing frameworks for procurement, licensing, and collaboration across the infrastructure ecosystem; partnering with finance and operations teams to align contract terms with business and compliance requirements; collaborating with policy and regulatory colleagues on global supply chain, export control, and manufacturing issues; and building scalable, efficient contracting processes that support infrastructure development at speed while managing risk.
Ideal candidates bring 8+ years of legal experience with substantial focus on technology transactions and commercial contracting, a JD and California bar license, a mix of in-house and top-tier law firm experience, expertise negotiating infrastructure domain agreements, familiarity with global supply chains and manufacturing transactions, demonstrated ability to operate autonomously in technical fast-moving environments, exceptional communication skills, experience advising on cross-border deals and global regulatory frameworks, and prior experience with infrastructure, supply agreements, joint ventures, or complex commercial deals in hardware industries.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
