OpenAI's Legal team is seeking a Senior Counsel to advise on the development and deployment of business AI products, including ChatGPT Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the API platform. This role sits at the intersection of product strategy, safety, and legal compliance for frontier AI systems.
You will serve as a strategic legal partner to product, engineering, safety, security, and go-to-market teams. Key responsibilities include advising on product design and launches involving enterprise administration, data governance, identity and access controls, integrations, agentic capabilities, and multimodal experiences in the B2B space. You'll counsel teams on deploying frontier AI capabilities responsibly while balancing customer commitments, safety, security, and privacy considerations.
Additional duties include supporting strategic partnerships and distribution arrangements with cloud platforms, resellers, and third-party channels; partnering with Commercial Legal, Privacy, Security, Product Policy, and Go-to-Market teams on customer-facing commitments and launch readiness; and identifying emerging legal and policy issues across OpenAI's B2B products to help shape cross-functional strategies.
The ideal candidate has 8+ years of in-house or technology-focused law firm experience, a JD with California bar license, and a practical, principled approach to legal problem-solving. You should excel at building cross-functional relationships, demonstrate strong ownership and sound judgment in ambiguous situations, and maintain genuine enthusiasm for technology and AI. The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid model (three days in office per week) and relocation assistance available.
