Salary: USD 210,000 - 300,000 / annual
Column is a developer-first bank and financial infrastructure platform founded in 2019 by veterans from Plaid, Square, Meta, Blend, and Affirm. The company simplifies banking for fintech builders by offering technology-forward banking solutions that eliminate the traditional patchwork of vendors and middleware providers.
You will own the legal infrastructure behind Column's most important commercial and strategic relationships. This role goes beyond typical in-house counsel work reviewing SaaS contracts—you'll architect novel partnership structures that enable modern banking experiences while navigating complex regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities include:
- Own complex agreements end-to-end: structure, draft, and negotiate customer, vendor, and third-party agreements covering banking products and services, including payments, money movement, deposit accounts, cards, and lending programs.
- Build and manage legal playbooks and templates that scale across the bank's products, services, and distribution channels.
- Lead negotiations with high-growth fintechs and enterprise customers, balancing commercial priorities with regulatory requirements.
- Develop strong cross-functional partnerships with Sales, Business, Risk, and Compliance teams to understand deal goals, strategy, and risk tolerance.
- Support the growing Legal team with novel research, product and regulatory advice, exam management, subpoena responses, litigation deliverables, and corporate governance.
- Serve as a thought partner to improve bank agreements, policies, and legal processes.
You'll need 8+ years as a practicing lawyer, with priority given to candidates with law firm experience in technology transactions or fintech practice, and/or in-house experience at a fintech or financial institution. You should have experience driving complex commercial negotiations and independently drafting and negotiating commercial agreements with strong understanding of contract law and commercial transactions. Nice-to-haves include understanding of traditional commercial banking products (ACH, wire transactions, accounts, lending, cards, cash management), structured finance, lending products, and money transmission.
This is a hybrid role based in Column's Presidio office in San Francisco, requiring 3–4+ days per week in-office. The company offers up to $2,000/month in post-tax rent subsidy for employees living within 2 miles of the office and welcomes relocation candidates.
