Arista Networks is seeking a Senior C++ Engineer to join the Software for Open Networking in the Cloud (SONiC) team in Bucharest. SONiC is a critical software platform that powers some of the world's largest data center networks, running on Arista switches.
You will be a core member of a fast-paced, high-caliber engineering team responsible for developing, qualifying, and delivering SONiC software. Your work will span the full lifecycle of features—from gathering requirements with marketing and customers, to writing functional and design specifications, implementing solutions, creating test plans, and debugging issues in production networks.
Key responsibilities include:
- Writing functional and design specifications for system software managing hardware components
- Independently implementing solutions to small-sized problems using C, C++, and Python
- Writing test plan specifications and implementing automated test programs
- Debugging and fixing issues found by automated tests and customer networks
- Collaborating on larger routing protocol problems with the team
- Working with Customer Support and System Test Engineers to analyze and resolve network problems
- Mentoring junior engineers in Arista's development environment and SONiC ecosystem
- Reviewing and contributing to specifications and implementations from team members and the SONiC community
- Managing implementation and debugging schedules, reporting weekly to project leads
You will own projects from definition through deployment and be responsible for the quality of all deliverables. This role demands strong software engineering fundamentals and ideally a solid understanding of networking, including L2/L3 capabilities and commercial switching hardware.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BSc, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering with 2+ years of related post-graduate work experience
- Knowledge of C, C++, and/or Python
- Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
- Understanding of L2/L3 networking; desirable to have experience with at least one of: IP routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, BGP, IS-IS, PIM), Layer 2 features (802.1d bridging, Spanning Tree Protocol, Link Aggregation Control Protocol, Link Layer Discovery Protocol, RFC 1812 IP routing)
- Ability to utilize, test, and debug packet forwarding engines and vendor-provided hardware software libraries
- Infrastructure functions knowledge related to distributed systems (messaging, signaling, databases, CLI techniques)
- Desirable: hands-on experience in design and development of Ethernet bridging, routing, or distributed systems software
- Desirable: hands-on experience with enterprise or service provider class Ethernet switch/router system software development, or significant PhD-level research in network routing and packet forwarding
- Applied understanding of software engineering principles
- Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills
- Ability to design and implement solutions to small-sized problems independently; able to work on small teams solving medium-sized problems with limited oversight
