GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to lead the Trusted Agentic Development team within the Developer Experience group. This role focuses on solving a critical validation gap: AI agents can generate code and tests that pass but don't actually work in production. You'll own the technical strategy and build early prototypes to close this gap.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing the technical thesis for validating agent-generated code across multiple languages (Rust, Ruby, Go)
- Building proof-of-concept feedback mechanisms that distinguish between passing tests and working software
- Designing mid-loop feedback systems that help agents self-correct toward functional code
- Creating language-aware validation approaches under a unified "trusted" framework
- Collaborating with engineering teams to measure adoption, engineer trust, and validation quality
- Setting technical direction, reviewing designs, and mentoring teammates
You'll bring deep, hands-on experience building software with AI agents, a clear understanding of why agent output fails in production despite passing tests, and concrete ideas for closing the validation gap. You should be comfortable designing systems across multiple frameworks, prototyping to learn, and shipping solutions. Strong written communication is essential in GitLab's all-remote, asynchronous environment. This is not a QA or test automation role—it's for someone who has built with agents, experienced the validation problem firsthand, and wants to solve it at scale.
