Verkada is a $5.8B physical AI platform company protecting organizations through integrated video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. The company serves 30,000+ customers including 100+ Fortune 500 companies, with 2 million devices deployed across 170+ countries and over $1 billion in annualized bookings. The Device Platform team owns the backend infrastructure connecting Verkada's cloud to deployed hardware, managing device provisioning, OTA firmware rollouts, and the licensing layer that monetizes devices. The team currently operates at millions of devices and is scaling for the next order of magnitude while maintaining enterprise-grade consistency, latency, and uptime guarantees. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will architect and ship major platform features end-to-end—such as the IoT core, device-metrics platform, or licensing ledger. You'll lead operational improvements to increase system robustness and reduce incident noise, teach through design reviews and code reviews, and help shape the platform roadmap in alignment with company priorities. The team is currently five senior engineers plus a new graduate, and is expanding as the platform's reach grows across Verkada. You bring 6+ years of experience building backend services at scale with strong consistency, latency, and uptime guarantees. You're fluent in at least one server language (Python or Go preferred; Ruby or Node.js welcome). You excel at listening to other engineering teams, shaping shared technical direction, and shipping changes that enable others to build confidently. You're skilled at cross-team communication and can balance deep systems design with organizational alignment. This role requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency for FedRAMP compliance and five days per week onsite presence in San Mateo. No visa sponsorship is available for this position.
