Anthropic is seeking an experienced Safety & Security Counsel for its EMEA region, based in London. This role sits at the intersection of law, AI safety, and product security, serving as the primary legal advisor for keeping Claude and Anthropic's systems safe and secure.
You will counsel on the full spectrum of safety and security matters: usage policy design and enforcement frameworks, safeguards R&D, misuse detection and response, sensitive escalations with governments and regulators, threat intelligence, security incident response, and regulatory engagement. The work is novel and interdisciplinary—you will frequently build legally-relevant frameworks from first principles rather than applying existing templates.
Key responsibilities include partnering with trust & safety teams on usage policies across harm areas (CBRNE, cyber, user wellbeing, scaled abuse, influence operations, distillation); advising on enforcement frameworks and appeals; counseling on sensitive escalations involving law enforcement and the press; supporting safety and security engineering teams on detection mechanisms and data governance; serving as first-line legal contact during security incidents; building crisis management playbooks and escalation protocols; and staying abreast of AI policy and regulatory developments across jurisdictions.
You will work collaboratively across legal functions and contribute to team capacity building. This is high-stakes, first-of-its-kind work at the center of responsible AI development—ideal for an experienced attorney seeking to grow as a strategic product counsel and trusted crisis advisor in a fast-moving environment.
Minimum qualifications: qualification to practice law in England & Wales or another relevant jurisdiction; experience advising on fast-moving, high-stakes matters (investigations, regulatory work, crisis management, enforcement); working knowledge of trust & safety, cybersecurity, privacy, or platform regulation; strong legal drafting and writing skills; technical fluency in system architecture and AI model behavior; and experience coordinating multi-stakeholder responses to time-sensitive matters.
Preferred: 8+ years of relevant legal experience; in-house product counsel experience at a tech company on security/trust & safety, or law firm experience advising tech clients on regulatory investigations; content moderation and platform safety experience; facility with technical teams (ML, security research, threat intelligence); familiarity with AI systems; strong risk assessment judgment; and a hands-on, low-ego working style.
