Anthropic is seeking an experienced Safety & Security Counsel to serve as the primary legal advisor for Claude and Anthropic's safety and security initiatives. This role sits at the intersection of product, policy, and crisis management, covering the full spectrum of AI safety and security challenges: usage policy design and enforcement frameworks, safeguards R&D, misuse detection and response, threat intelligence, security incident response, and regulatory engagement. Key responsibilities include partnering with Safeguards (trust & safety) teams to design and iterate usage policies across harm areas such as CBRNE, cyber, user wellbeing, scaled abuse, influence operations, and model distillation. You will advise on policy enforcement frameworks including account actions, appeals, and enforcement thresholds. The role requires counseling on sensitive escalations involving governments, law enforcement, regulators, and media. You will advise on threat intelligence investigations, bug bounty programs, red-team arrangements, and safety/security testing. Supporting engineering and ML teams on detection mechanisms, data governance, and privacy considerations is essential. As a first-line legal contact for safety and security incidents, you will provide real-time guidance during incident response and assess notification and reporting obligations. You will build and maintain crisis management playbooks, escalation protocols, and self-serve legal guidance to enable scaling. Staying current on AI policy and regulatory developments across jurisdictions and translating them into practical product guidance is critical. Minimum qualifications include a JD and active bar membership in at least one U.S. state. You need legal experience with fast-moving, high-stakes matters such as investigations, regulatory work, crisis management, or enforcement. Working knowledge of trust & safety, cybersecurity, privacy, or platform regulation is required, along with technical fluency to understand system architecture, data flows, and AI model behavior. Strong legal writing skills for policy language, playbooks, and non-legal audiences are essential, as is experience coordinating multi-stakeholder responses and translating legal analysis into actionable steps. Preferred qualifications include California bar membership, 4-8+ years of relevant legal experience, in-house product counsel experience at tech companies on security/trust & safety, or law firm experience advising on regulatory investigations. Content moderation, platform safety, and crisis management experience is valued. Facility with technical teams (ML, security research, infrastructure, threat intel) and familiarity with AI systems and novel technology products are preferred.
