Counsel Health is building an AI-native medical group that multiplies healthcare capacity through personalized, AI-enabled clinical tools. The team combines deep expertise from Harvard, MIT, Google, DeepMind, and other leading institutions. As a Research Scientist, you will bridge fundamental AI research and product innovation in healthcare. You'll own end-to-end research projects spanning machine learning, natural language processing, and agentic systems applied to real clinical problems. Key responsibilities include: evaluating AI models on clinical tasks using both automated benchmarks and human assessment; building health-focused AI models with pre-training and post-training workflows optimized for clinical environments; designing novel agentic systems for patients and physicians (e.g., prescription pre-drafting systems); prototyping and running simulations to validate research hypotheses; publishing research findings in top-tier venues; and fostering research culture across teams. You'll work closely with clinical physicians and engineering teams to ensure safety, efficacy, and real-world impact. The role offers significant ownership and the opportunity to directly influence how AI transforms healthcare delivery. Required qualifications: PhD in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent practical experience); 5+ years coding in Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or R; 2+ years owning and initiating research agendas; publications in top-tier AI/ML conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR); expertise in agentic generative AI systems and LLMs; experience with evaluation methodologies. Prior healthcare research or clinical data experience is valued. Familiarity with FHIR and OMOP healthcare data formats is a plus.
