OpenAI's Research Program Management team seeks an experienced Research Program Manager to embed with research teams and drive technically complex AI model development initiatives. You will translate evolving research priorities into actionable programs, help teams navigate technical and operational tradeoffs, and keep critical work moving as new issues emerge.
This is a hands-on technical role requiring direct engagement with research workflows, experimental results, technical systems, and engineering constraints. Your work may span model training, reasoning, evaluations, compute infrastructure, research infrastructure, safety, model launch readiness, and governance. You will partner with researchers and engineers across core model development, alignment and safety, and collaborate with Security, Applied product and engineering, Strategy, and Scaling teams.
You will translate complex technical priorities into coordinated execution, help teams make sound decisions with incomplete information, and introduce structure without creating unnecessary processes. The role requires substantive engagement with topics such as model training, experimental design, model safety, evaluation methods, data workflows, compute infrastructure, and distributed systems.
Key responsibilities include moving complex, ambiguous technical initiatives forward across multiple teams and stakeholders, distinguishing what is known from uncertain, asking incisive technical questions, and communicating clearly across technical and nontechnical audiences including researchers, engineers, and organizational leaders. You will take ownership without waiting for perfect conditions, adapt quickly as priorities change, and follow difficult problems through to resolution.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in office per week. Relocation assistance is offered to new employees. This position requires 5+ years of experience in research program management, technical program management, or related roles in fast-moving environments, with a strong track record of moving complex technical initiatives forward and a deep commitment to advancing AI research responsibly.
