Eight Sleep is seeking a Research Associate to manage and execute human research studies for the company's sleep fitness platform. This role sits on the Research & Development team, reporting to the Senior Director of Science & Clinical Research.
You will own the end-to-end execution of research studies, including internal product validation, prototype testing, new feature development, and large-scale external validation studies. The position combines hands-on data collection, operational management, and subject coordination.
Key responsibilities include:
- Subject recruitment, screening, and scheduling: recruit participants for internal studies, build and maintain Eight Sleep's beta tester and lab tester databases, and optimize recruitment workflows.
- Data collection and trial management: manage day-to-day study operations including IRB submissions, recruitment, scheduling, reminder communications, and equipment ordering. This role involves substantial data collection (potentially 80–90% of time) to meet product decision deadlines. You will be responsible for study setup and email/phone responses between 6–9 PM on weeknights and weekend data monitoring.
- Data management: maintain accurate study records and regulatory documentation in compliance with IRB and HIPAA guidelines. Perform quality assurance on all collected data, follow up with subjects to resolve issues, and ensure data completeness and accuracy.
The role offers high growth potential to develop expertise in experimental design, white paper and peer-reviewed paper writing, sensor engineering, and coding/data analysis.

REQUIREMENTS:
- 1+ years of experience running human factors research, user testing, or in-person human research studies
- Experience with prototype hardware, software, Google Suite, and command-line tools
- Basic understanding of hardware, software, and firmware for data collection purposes
- Superior communication skills, excellent time management and organizational skills, high attention to detail, and ability to adapt quickly to changes
- Willing to work nights and weekends for study setup and checks
- Willing to locally travel to users' homes (must have a car) to set up the Pod for testing
- Able to lift approximately 25 pounds and perform physical tasks such as changing Pod covers and sheets
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Human Physiology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, or related field
PREFERRED:
- 2+ years of experience working with wearable devices, medical devices, or related tech that measures/monitors humans
- Experience running small and large-scale user research studies (in-person and decentralized)
- Experience coding in Python
- Previous startup experience
- Experience delivering informed consents and following HIPAA guidelines for data management
