Anthropic seeks a Regulatory Investigations Counsel to lead the company's response to government and regulatory investigations, inquiries, and information requests. You will manage matters from initial contact through resolution, working with federal agencies, state attorneys general, and international regulatory bodies. Responsibilities include scoping and negotiating requests, coordinating document collection and production, preparing witnesses, drafting written responses, managing Congressional inquiries, and collaborating with outside counsel to keep matters efficient and aligned with company priorities.
You will work cross-functionally with technical, product, policy, and business teams to collect information efficiently, evaluate risk, and develop resolution strategies. You will represent Anthropic in interactions with regulators and support public policy colleagues in broader regulator engagement. A key part of the role involves developing internal processes, playbooks, and tools that make regulatory response scalable and consistent across matters, including where inquiries may overlap with litigation. You will also track enforcement trends and regulatory developments, sharing insights with stakeholders in actionable forms.
The role requires substantial experience managing government or regulatory investigations, including responding to civil investigative demands, subpoenas, or comparable formal requests. You should have experience working with technology companies and/or technical clients, strong communication and legal writing skills, and the ability to distill complex facts and law into clear advice for legal and non-legal audiences. Experience managing outside counsel and coordinating large information requests across an organization is essential. The ideal candidate brings the instincts of a litigator, the judgment of a counselor, and an interest in building systems that let a small team handle a growing docket well.
Preferred qualifications include 8-12 years of practicing law with a combination of experience at a global-focused law firm and in-house, experience with enforcement matters before federal agencies or international regulatory bodies, prior experience at a regulatory or enforcement agency, working knowledge of competition/antitrust law or cybersecurity/privacy law, civil litigation experience for technology companies, and familiarity with AI-specific regulatory frameworks. The role requires composure under time pressure and public scrutiny, sound judgment on risk tradeoffs, and the ability to move work forward with incomplete information.
