The Legal, Risk & Compliance team is seeking a Regulatory Counsel to support regulatory matters across the Americas region. This role focuses on advising on regulatory issues relating to payments and financial services, including licensing, money transmission requirements, and cross-border product offerings.
You will provide practical legal advice to business and control-function stakeholders across the Americas, with primary focus on the US market. Working with support and mentorship from senior legal team members, you will own defined regulatory workstreams, contribute to licensing and product initiatives, and build expertise in US payments regulation, money-transmitter licensing, and regulatory treatment of different payment flows.
Key responsibilities include: supporting regulatory legal matters relating to Airwallex's business across the Americas; researching and summarizing developments in payments and financial services regulation; partnering with Product Legal, Regulatory Compliance, Risk and Financial Crime Compliance teams on regulatory questions involving money transmission, stored value, FX, remittance, and card issuing; supporting new market entry and license expansion initiatives; analyzing payment structures to identify applicable licensing and regulatory requirements; providing clear, practical legal guidance and risk assessments to cross-functional stakeholders; managing external legal counsel and consultants; assisting with regulatory filings and submissions; monitoring regulatory developments; leveraging AI tools to improve team efficiency; and contributing to government-relations and policy work.
The ideal candidate is curious, detail-oriented, collaborative, and comfortable translating complex legal requirements into clear, actionable guidance. This hybrid role is based in San Francisco or New York, offering opportunities to work on meaningful regulatory matters across the US with potential support for projects in Canada, Mexico, and Brazil.
