Tutor Intelligence builds and deploys autonomous palletizing and case-pick robots, scaling from dozens to over 1,000 units by 2028 with in-house manufacturing in Watertown, MA. This Production Engineer role owns the complete engineering change order (ECO) process—from approved design through factory floor implementation—ensuring clean cut-ins, updated procedures, trained technicians, correct inventory, and first-time-right builds.
You will serve as the technical bridge between Hardware Engineering, Supply Chain, Production, and Customer Success, working across both product lines (Cassie and Sonny). As an individual contributor with real authority, you control whether changes reach the floor, and you have the autonomy to push back if a change isn't ready.
Key responsibilities include: end-to-end ECO implementation (effectivity planning, MBOM updates in the ION MES, redlines, first-build verification); representing Manufacturing at the Change Review Board to assess build impact, cost, inventory, scrap, and schedule; cut-in planning with Supply Chain to decide what to buy, stop buying, and how to disposition existing inventory; writing and maintaining clear, visual work instructions with error-proofing; training technicians on every change before line deployment; partnering with Field Service on retrofit plans for deployed robots; owning process performance metrics (first-pass yield, cycle time, scrap, rework) and driving improvement with data; providing early DFM feedback to Hardware Engineering; and helping shape in-house ECO and PLM tooling that connects Onshape, ION, and the factory floor, using AI tools daily to write procedures and analyze data.
Success milestones: by 30 days, you know the Cassie line and ECO flow and have carried at least one ECO through verified cut-in; by 90 days, every approved ECO has an owner, effectivity, cut-in plan, and updated work instructions before reaching the floor; by 6 months, time from ECO approval to verified cut-in is measured and falling, scrap and rework from changes are tracked and trending down, and the ECO process is documented for new engineers to run independently.
REQUIREMENTS:
- BS in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechatronics, Electrical, or related engineering discipline
- 3+ years as a manufacturing, production, or process engineer building electromechanical hardware (robotics, automation, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, or similar)
- Hands-on experience implementing engineering changes on a production line: ECOs/ECNs, effectivity, BOM changes, cut-ins, and material disposition
- Track record of writing work instructions that technicians actually use and training them on the floor
- Comfortable in CAD (Onshape, SolidWorks, or similar) and reading drawings, GD&T, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Experience working in an MES, ERP, or PLM system (ION, Arena, SAP, Oracle, or similar)
- Demonstrated ability to thrive where systems are still being built and willingness to help build them
NICE TO HAVE:
- Scaling a new product from prototype to production rate
- Lean and Six Sigma tools: PFMEA, control plans, poka-yoke, SPC
- Cable harness or electromechanical assembly experience
- SQL, Python, or scripting to build tools and automate data work
- Experience at a startup or fast-scaling hardware company
