OpenAI's Product Policy team is seeking a Research and Advisory Partnerships Lead to build and manage relationships with external experts, researchers, civil society organizations, and stakeholders who inform product and policy decisions across ChatGPT, GPTs, the GPT Store, Codex, and the OpenAI API.
In this role, you will develop and launch external advisory councils and governance mechanisms that provide structured input on product policy. You'll identify and engage researchers, academics, and civil society experts whose perspectives strengthen AI development and deployment. Key responsibilities include building and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, designing research partnerships with academic institutions, and translating academic findings into actionable guidance for internal teams.
You will work at the intersection of product, policy, research, and governance, collaborating across product, safety, legal, research, communications, and leadership teams. You'll stay current on emerging academic research relevant to AI's social and ethical implications, develop clear processes for collecting and synthesizing external guidance, and manage operational aspects of partnerships including contracts, budgets, confidentiality, and research governance.
The role requires representing OpenAI in research, academic, and stakeholder forums while building trusted relationships grounded in substantive engagement. You'll prepare briefing materials and recommendations for senior leaders on external perspectives and emerging issues requiring stakeholder input.
Ideal candidates have experience building external partnerships, advisory bodies, or research collaborations in technology, academia, government, or civil society. You should understand social, ethical, and policy questions associated with AI and emerging technologies, be comfortable engaging with social science researchers across disciplines, and excel at translating complex perspectives into clear guidance for technical and policy teams. Strong communication skills, ability to work independently in fast-moving environments, and motivation to ensure external expertise shapes responsible AI development are essential.
OpenAI uses a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offers relocation assistance.
