Ethos Life, a leading life insurance technology company, is seeking an experienced actuary to lead mortality analytics and actuarial assumption modeling. This role owns mortality-related assumptions and actuarial inputs across product development, forecasting, and financial reporting. Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining expected mortality models, assumption frameworks, and experience studies; leveraging post-issue audit data and mortality risk scores to predict mortality; monitoring actual-to-expected mortality experience in collaboration with underwriting and data science teams; designing protective value studies to quantify the mortality lift of underwriting requirements; and quantifying the impact of applicant behavior on expected mortality and mortality curve shapes. The role requires translating complex actuarial insights into actionable business recommendations for senior leaders and external partners. You will serve as Ethos's mortality subject matter expert, advising on product competitiveness and financial integrity while applying AI and emerging techniques to modernize traditional insurance actuarial approaches. Required qualifications include FSA or near-FSA designation (experienced ASA candidates considered); 5+ years of life insurance actuarial experience with exposure to mortality and underwriting models; proven ability to translate third-party data and leading indicators into expected mortality outcomes; experience with assumption setting for life insurance pricing, forecasting, or valuation; and a track record of partnering with finance, product, and underwriting teams to align actuarial rigor with business velocity. Technical skills required: proficiency with modern data tools (SQL, dbt, Snowflake), statistical modeling in R or Python, Excel, and actuarial modeling tools. Strong communication skills are essential to translate technical work for non-actuarial audiences.
