Salary: USD 385,000 - 460,000 / annual
Anthropic is seeking a Product Manager for its Safeguards team to own the ideation, design, development, and deployment of safety systems protecting users from risks of powerful AI systems. You will work across research, product, and engineering teams to develop detections, evaluations, interventions, and measurement tools to mitigate deployment and user risks across Claude.ai, the 1P API, and external cloud platforms.
Key responsibilities include:
- Determining how to build safety by design upstream and leverage downstream defenses for frontier models across multiple surfaces
- Writing safety evaluations and communicating externally about safety
- Driving impact through ruthless prioritization by defining problems, solution options, and clear technical/business tradeoffs
- Aligning and collaborating with policy, enforcement, research, engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders
- Understanding the AI landscape and ecosystem to plan mitigation of deployment risks from increasingly powerful models
- Leading development of metrics to understand performance, blindspots, and inform future planning
You should be deeply committed to making AI safe and beneficial, aware of AI risks, and comfortable working with experts in ambiguous, rapidly moving environments. The role requires strong technical expertise in development, deployment, and measurement of safeguards systems.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to make technical tradeoff decisions with experience working across policy experts, AI/ML research engineers, and software engineering teams to design state-of-the-art safety systems
- Strong user understanding of how products are used, safeguards concerns, and how to provide best solutions
- Demonstrated ability to build product and engineering strategy across multiple cross-functional teams in a rapidly changing space
- Demonstrated experience designing and building metrics to evaluate risks, system performance, and user impact with crisp tradeoffs
- Very strong ability to navigate and prioritize amidst rapidly changing product specs and flex into different domains
- Evidence of exercising judgment and decision-making in ambiguous situations
- Planning, building, launching, and measuring new products/systems in zero-to-one environments
- Ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences in written and verbal communication
- Creative thinking about risks and benefits of new technologies beyond past checklists and playbooks
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Preferred: 5+ years in product management with focus on fast problem understanding, building roadmaps with tractable progress, and ability to get into details on data, detection, interventions, infrastructure, tools, and evals
