Dirac is building BuildOS, a creative suite for manufacturing engineering that consolidates fragmented workflows (process plans, MBOMs, routings, work instructions, spreadsheets, PLM, ERP) into a single environment. Manufacturing engineers currently rebuild context across multiple tools whenever designs change. BuildOS aims to become the canonical definition of how products are produced—similar to how Figma owns the design file and GitHub owns the repo.
As an early Product Designer, you will own projects end-to-end from research through release, defining how the suite works and feels. You'll shape both structure (flows, information architecture, wireframes) and surface (layout, typography, color, interaction polish). This is an opportunity to define the interaction model and design language for an entirely new software category.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design across BuildOS features: 3D CAD interaction, structured data authoring, document generation, and shop floor workflows
- Define patterns, primitives, and interactions that make complex workflows feel coherent
- Study existing spreadsheets, internal tools, and manual processes; design faster, more complete, more trustworthy replacements
- Become fluent in manufacturing workflows: BOMs, BOPs, work instructions, GD&T, PMI, revision control, work centers, takt time
- Conduct user research and spend time on factory floors with manufacturing engineers, operators, and customers
- Establish Dirac's design language, design system, and product standards as BuildOS grows
- Partner closely with Product and Engineering from exploration through implementation and release
- Contribute beyond traditional design: user research, prototyping, frontend development, and product polish
You'll work in a small, autonomous team that values quality, feedback, and bias toward action. This role offers the rare opportunity to shape both the interaction model and design language for an emerging software category serving technical users in manufacturing.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of product design experience, ideally with complex B2B, technical, or professional software
- High technical acumen and experience designing complex systems, workflows, and information-heavy interfaces
- Strong interaction and visual design skills from early concepts through polished production-ready designs
- Proven ability to own projects end-to-end: research, problem definition, design, implementation, release
- Strong product judgment balancing user needs, technical constraints, business priorities, and speed
- High attention to detail and strong bar for craft, usability, and visual quality
- Self-directed, able to prioritize independently and thrive in fast-moving, ambiguous environments
- Experience using qualitative and quantitative insights to inform design decisions
- Familiarity with user research, usability testing, and prototyping
- Ability to clearly communicate design decisions and rationale to Product and Engineering
- Bias toward shipping and iteration over perfection
- Curiosity about how physical things get made (manufacturing experience not required, but willingness to build expertise is)
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience designing CAD, PLM, EDA, developer tools, data tools, industrial software, or professional-grade applications
- Experience designing complex data models, tables, hierarchical information, timelines, graphs, or 3D/spatial interfaces
- Experience building or maintaining a design system
- Ability to contribute frontend code (React, TypeScript, HTML, CSS)
- Experience designing zero-to-one products or working at early-stage startups
- Experience conducting research with specialized technical users
- Exposure to manufacturing, mechanical engineering, robotics, aerospace, automotive, industrial engineering, or hardware development
