HUD is building infrastructure for AI data, creating a marketplace and platform used by startups, Fortune 500 companies, and frontier labs. The company is backed by $16M in funding from top VCs and Y Combinator (W25) and is scaling profitably to meet strong demand.
As a Design Engineer, you will design and build user-facing experiences across HUD's products and marketplace. Your work will focus on making technically complex workflows—such as agent runs, evaluation results, reward signals, and quality feedback—understandable and actionable for users. You'll help people create and evaluate environments, understand agent behavior, improve training data, and make informed decisions based on results.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and build interfaces across the platform and marketplace, from early concepts through shipped product
- Make complex RL and evaluation workflows understandable and actionable
- Collaborate closely with research and engineering teams to turn technical concepts into useful tools
- Conduct user research, observe pain points, and iterate based on feedback
- Develop thoughtful interaction patterns while maintaining high standards for usability, visual quality, and implementation
You'll work in a small, high-caliber team of ~25 people, including 4 International Olympiad medalists, serial AI startup founders, and researchers with publications at top conferences. The role requires both practical execution and strategic thinking about how humans will interact with increasingly capable AI agents.
REQUIREMENTS:
You should have:
- Strong product and interaction design judgment, especially for complex tools or workflows
- Front-end engineering skills and the ability to turn designs into working product interfaces
- A track record of shipping products, learning from users, and iterating
- Ability to understand technical concepts well enough to explain them clearly to users
- Good judgment about shipping velocity versus experience quality
- Clear communication and comfort working closely with engineers, researchers, and users
Strong candidates may also have:
- Experience designing developer tools, data-rich products, or research software
- Familiarity with AI agents, evaluations, reinforcement learning, or training data
- Experience creating reusable interface patterns as products scale
- Experience working independently in early-stage companies
The company prioritizes technical aptitude and learning potential over years of experience and encourages motivated candidates to apply even if they don't meet all criteria.
