Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonised energy system, controlling hundreds of thousands of energy assets (vehicle charging, heating systems, home batteries) to shift energy usage to times when electricity is cheap and green. The company operates at high speed in a legacy industry, backed by world-leading investors including Accel. As the first product designer, you will be a foundational hire responsible for elevating design quality across the entire organization. You'll operate in a flat, autonomous structure within small interdisciplinary teams of engineers and product managers, serving as a design pillar that understands users, leads strategic direction, and ensures customer needs are always represented. Key responsibilities include: - Understanding user problems and designing experiences to solve them across both B2C and B2B2C products - Building design systems and frameworks (in Claude and code) that enable the team to ship beautiful software faster - Deepening the company's culture of user research and getting into how people experience Axle's products - Leading visual identity and storytelling through web, animation, and video - Working with global clients to improve their user experiences - Providing enablement and coaching to raise design output across the business - Supporting how Axle represents itself externally to prospects, clients, investors, and potential employees You'll thrive in this role if you're energized by ambiguity, take a pragmatic outcome-first approach, are excited about bringing sophisticated technology to broader audiences, are deeply curious about how people experience the world, and have a strong aesthetic sense. The company operates with a deliberately flat structure and equitable pay (1:1 median ratio between founder and team compensation). Hybrid working with 2-3 days per week in the dog-friendly office around Farringdon. Enhanced parental leave and bi-annual retreats included. Requirements: Not explicitly stated in the posting. The role appears to seek an experienced product designer comfortable with ambiguity, user research, design systems, and visual/brand work, but specific years of experience or formal qualifications are not listed.
