Gusto is seeking an experienced Product Counsel to serve as the embedded legal partner for its HR Apps portfolio—a suite of products spanning employee handbooks, compliance guidance, hiring, onboarding, leaves of absence, I-9 processing, regulatory reporting, background checks, learning management, performance management, and offboarding.
You will provide day-to-day legal support to HR Apps product and engineering teams, focusing on building compliant, scalable HR products for small businesses. This role requires a detail-oriented attorney with a builder's mentality and a pragmatic "find a way forward" approach to complex legal and product challenges.
Key responsibilities include:
- Provide tactical legal support across a broad HR product portfolio, identifying compliance and regulatory risks early in development and throughout the product lifecycle
- Review product requirements and develop compliance artifacts to seed Gusto's compliance rules engine and maintain a centralized compliance hub
- Build processes, resources, and AI-driven workflows—including self-help checklists, playbooks, and structured frameworks—that standardize review workflows and reduce risk
- Research regulatory developments and monitor legislative changes impacting HR Apps offerings
- Resolve customer escalations and operational legal questions related to HR products
- Support vendor review, partner integrations, GTM communications, and terms drafting
You'll work within Gusto's Legal & Compliance team, which partners with product and engineering to enable innovation, facilitate growth, and provide compliant products. The role requires strong organizational skills, a process-oriented mindset, and the ability to manage high-volume requests across a diverse product portfolio. You're expected to use AI tools in everyday work to accelerate research, synthesize insights, and refine positioning while maintaining legal accuracy.
