Solace is a Series C healthcare startup (founded 2022, $1B valuation) that pairs patients with expert advocates and tools to navigate the complex U.S. healthcare system. The company is backed by top-tier VCs including Inspired Capital, Craft Ventures, and Menlo Ventures.
As Product Counsel, you will serve as the primary legal partner to the Product and Engineering teams, advising across the full product lifecycle from early design through launch. You'll report to the Head of Commercial Legal and work to identify and address legal risk early rather than at the finish line.
Key responsibilities include:
- Counsel Product and Engineering teams on privacy and technology matters throughout the product development cycle, from initial design conversations through launch.
- Implement privacy-by-design principles across the company, advising on data flows, collection, use, and protection of PHI and sensitive data.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA/HITECH, state consumer-health-privacy laws (e.g., Washington's My Health My Data Act), CCPA/CPRA, and other U.S. privacy and security requirements.
- Lead privacy assessments for new features and AI-powered services, translating findings into concrete product requirements.
- Partner with Marketing on advertising claims, consumer-protection and FTC considerations, and ad-tech practices.
- Draft, negotiate, and maintain user-facing legal documents including terms of service, consents, privacy notices, and telehealth disclosures.
- Advise on data-sharing arrangements and vendor/partner integrations, coordinating on BAAs, DPAs, and related agreements.
- Build templates, playbooks, and self-service guidance to support rapid scaling without becoming a bottleneck.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Security, Compliance, Operations, and Finance teams.
You must have a JD from an accredited law school and active bar membership. You'll bring 3-6 years of experience counseling product and engineering teams on privacy and technology matters, with a strong foundation in healthcare privacy and data protection (HIPAA/HITECH and U.S. state privacy laws). Experience in healthcare, digital health, or other regulated environments is essential. You should be fluent across the product-counsel toolkit including AI/ML, intellectual property, consumer protection, and advertising/marketing law. Strong judgment on risk versus velocity, excellent communication skills, and the ability to translate complex legal issues into actionable guidance for product and engineering teams are critical.
Nice-to-have qualifications include privacy certification (e.g., CIPP/US), experience with health-data marketing/ad-tech, and familiarity with telehealth or marketplace models.
The role is remote but requires occasional travel to Solace's headquarters in Redwood City, California. Applicants must be based in the United States.
