Kikoff is a profitable, pre-IPO fintech company on a mission to empower financial security at scale. The company has achieved record revenue growth and a unicorn valuation, serving millions of users through credit-building products, earned wage access (EWA), and emerging financial services. As Product Counsel, you will serve as a legal partner to product, engineering, and business teams, working across Kikoff's growing product ecosystem. This is a high-ownership role for someone early enough in their career to build depth but experienced enough to own problems end-to-end. Key responsibilities include: - Act as day-to-day legal advisor to product and engineering teams throughout the development lifecycle, from concept through launch and iteration - Advise on design, structuring, and regulatory implications of consumer financial products including credit-building, EWA, and new concepts - Research and apply federal and state consumer financial regulations (TILA, ECOA, FCRA, EFTA, UDAAP, state frameworks) - Provide guidance on marketing and communications compliance (TCPA, CAN-SPAM) - Support both bank-partnered and non-bank product structures - Advise on data privacy and consumer data protection requirements - Track regulatory developments from CFPB, state regulators, and courts; translate into actionable product guidance - Support state licensing applications, renewals, and compliance filings - Draft, review, and negotiate consumer-facing terms, disclosures, marketing materials, and commercial agreements - Collaborate cross-functionally with compliance, risk, marketing, and operations to embed legal guardrails without slowing innovation Required qualifications: J.D. from accredited law school; active California state bar membership or registered in-house counsel status; 5-8 years legal experience with meaningful time in consumer financial services, fintech, or adjacent regulatory practice; working knowledge of federal consumer finance statutes; exposure to credit-building, EWA, consumer lending through bank partnerships, or payments; comfort in fast-moving, ambiguous environments; strong written and verbal communication skills; experience or curiosity with AI in legal functions. Nice-to-have: familiarity with consumer data privacy laws (CCPA/CPRA, GLBA); experience advising on AI/algorithmic decision-making in consumer finance; multi-state licensing exposure; corporate governance or securities experience at scaling companies.
