Travertine is an industrial transformation company scaling electrochemical technology for sulfur-decoupled production of critical minerals, starting with phosphate. The company enables large-scale circularity in extractive industries while decarbonizing building materials by recycling sulfate wastes into sulfuric acid and valuable mineral co-products. Travertine has raised over $29M in capital, including $5M+ in US Federal and State grants, and has successfully operated a demonstration plant for over 3,000 hours. The company is now developing its first commercial plant—the only new phosphate plant being built on US soil in over 50 years.
The Process Development Manager will report to the Director of Process Development and manage a portfolio of R&D projects focused on developing processes in the phosphate and sulfuric acid space. This role oversees experimental design, analysis, and piloting to develop and scale-up Travertine's core technologies. Key responsibilities include maintaining a safe and productive work environment, managing and mentoring junior engineers and technicians, translating process engineering needs into executable work packages, supporting laboratory and pilot equipment design and construction, converting benchtop and pilot data into heat and mass balance model inputs, reviewing and improving process flow diagrams (PFDs) and equipment lists, and troubleshooting performance issues in lab and pilot experiments. The successful candidate will excel at translating experimental results into scalable processes and executing experimental planning on compressed timelines.
REQUIREMENTS:
- MS degree or higher in engineering (chemical, materials, or metallurgical) or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of applied chemical process development/design experience
- Project management experience under aggressive timelines with diverse teams
- Demonstrated leadership and personnel development skills
- Proven skills in chemical experiment design, data acquisition and validation, mass balance development, and translation of laboratory results to process design
- Hands-on laboratory work experience, including chemical and physical analytical techniques (wet chemistry, spectroscopy, mineralogical characterization)
- Experience reading and writing process flow diagrams (PFDs) and developing mass and energy balance models (MEBs)
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience interfacing with vendors and contractors to integrate development results into engineering designs
- Start-up or R&D environment experience
- Translation of process design from pilot to commercial scale
- Experience in phosphate fertilizer production, chlor-alkali, electrolysis, and/or hydrometallurgy
