Tailscale is seeking a Principal Product Manager to lead its dataplane platform—the critical infrastructure layer that carries customer traffic and delivers fast, secure, reliable connectivity. The dataplane now serves over 7 million monthly active devices and has evolved beyond VPN use cases to power production AI infrastructure, CI/CD workflows, and Kubernetes workloads across enterprises.
In this role, you will own the complete vision and roadmap for Tailscale's dataplane, spanning WireGuard behavior, DERP relay expansion and capacity, subnet routers, exit nodes, and client-side networking. You'll define performance and reliability as customer-facing product requirements and own connectivity strategy end-to-end: regional expansion, capacity planning, relay health observability, enterprise DERP/Peer Relay offerings, and regulated deployment requirements.
Key responsibilities include driving the roadmap for operational primitives (subnet routers, exit nodes, Peer Relays) with focus on deployment topology, high-availability modes, and production tooling. You'll own the application-layer connectivity surface—App Connectors, Services, DNS, and network segmentation—that determines how traffic routes and how AI agents, CI/CD, and Kubernetes reach cloud resources. You'll also own the operator control surface: how network engineers and IT admins configure, segment, monitor, and troubleshoot networks at scale via admin console and CLI.
You'll partner closely with design, GTM, Customer Success, and Solutions Engineering to translate customer learnings into roadmap priorities, particularly around production traffic commitments and strategic enterprise deals. You'll represent Tailscale's dataplane externally as a credible domain authority to enterprise customers, cloud partners, and the networking community.
The role reports directly to Tailscale's VP Product and requires deep expertise in networking infrastructure at scale, comfort operating below L4 (routing, NAT traversal, MTU/MSS, congestion, latency, packet loss) and at the application layer (overlay routing, proxies, DNS, segmentation). You'll need 10+ years in product management owning networking, transport, edge, or infrastructure products, with demonstrated ability to define performance commitments, operate under production SLOs, and handle system failures.
