Rocket Lab's Optical Systems division is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of next-generation space-based electro-optical sensor systems for Department of Defense and Intelligence Community customers. This role requires an Active Secret/Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.
As the definitive technical authority, you will guide a multi-disciplinary engineering team through all phases of development—from requirements definition through integration, test, and sustainment. You'll own the technical baseline for programs, ensuring requirements are achieved and systems deliver mission value. Key responsibilities include chairing program gate reviews (SRR through TRR), directing payload and ground system architecture development, overseeing engineering execution to meet cost and schedule objectives, and managing subcontractor oversight.
You will enforce engineering standards and processes while advancing Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Digital Engineering practices. You'll own program risk registers, proactively mitigating risks and capturing performance improvement opportunities. As the primary technical interface with customer teams, subcontractors, and leadership, you'll engage stakeholders at all levels. You'll also contribute to proposals and technical volumes, support business development, and mentor engineers across disciplines to foster collaboration and technical excellence.
Rocket Lab's Space Systems team has enabled over 1,700 missions, including interplanetary exploration, in-space manufacturing, and national security initiatives.
