Veracyte is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to lead the development of oncology-focused digital pathology AI (DPAI) models. This role sits at the intersection of machine learning, medical imaging, and cancer diagnostics, offering the opportunity to work with one of the world's largest multi-modal oncology databases.
You will own algorithm development for new diagnostic products based on digital pathology, leveraging whole-slide imaging (WSI) data to predict clinical outcomes and morphologic features. Key responsibilities include: developing and adapting state-of-the-art AI foundation models; identifying appropriate data sources and leading annotation efforts; breaking down complex ML problems into actionable sub-projects and delegating to junior team members; collaborating with internal and external clinical partners to align algorithms with product requirements; partnering with bioinformatics and statistical experts to publish findings in peer-reviewed journals; and coordinating cross-functional research efforts to build evidence for model utility.
You will serve as a technical leader, managing project execution and mentoring junior data scientists. The role requires deep expertise in computer vision and machine learning applied to medical imaging, combined with the ability to communicate complex AI concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required qualifications: PhD in Data Science, Machine Learning, Applied Math, or equivalent; 8+ years as a data/applied scientist in disease-related fields (cancer preferred); expert-level Python proficiency for AI/ML and computer vision; strong statistical analysis skills including survival modeling and multivariate regression; cloud computing experience (AWS preferred); demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and break down complex problems; and proven track record of publishing and presenting findings.
Preferred experience includes technical leadership or management roles, familiarity with regulated diagnostic environments (LDT/IVD), and hands-on work with real-world clinical data.
