Altus Group is hiring a Principal Data Engineer to lead the technical vision for a unified, scalable data platform. Reporting to the Head of Data Science, you will combine deep technical execution with strategic influence, developing reusable frameworks, engineering standards, and production-ready capabilities on Databricks. You will partner with Architecture, Data Science, ML Engineering, Product, and other technology teams to strengthen how data is built, managed, monitored, and delivered across the organization.
Key responsibilities include:
- Setting technical direction by partnering with Architecture to define reusable data engineering patterns and frameworks, then leading their implementation and adoption across the data engineering function.
- Building scalable data capabilities on Databricks using Python, SQL, and Spark, establishing monitoring and operational practices that support reliable, maintainable, and cost-effective solutions.
- Assessing emerging data technologies, recommending practical adoption opportunities, and creating reusable capabilities as the data platform evolves.
- Shaping cross-functional planning by representing Data Engineering in strategic discussions with Data Science, ML Engineering, Product, Architecture, and other stakeholders.
- Developing engineering talent through mentoring, code reviews, and practical guidance that improves engineering quality and technical capability.
- Translating complex commercial real estate data needs into solutions that support analytics, machine learning, and customer-facing products.
- Driving multiple concurrent initiatives with impact beyond a single project or team.
You will work with distinctive commercial real estate data that supports new products, analytics, and insights for customers and internal teams. This role offers the scope to shape technical direction across Altus Group's data engineering function, with opportunities to deepen technical expertise, expand strategic influence, mentor others, and explore broader leadership or product-focused career paths.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Extensive experience designing, building, and operating data engineering solutions in production, including distributed data systems, cloud platforms, and modern data infrastructure.
- Strong programming skills in Python, SQL, and Spark, with practical experience using Databricks.
- Ability to design reliable, reusable, and maintainable pipelines, frameworks, and data products.
- Track record of creating technical standards, engineering patterns, or platform capabilities adopted across multiple teams.
- Ability to balance architectural direction with practical implementation decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to represent Data Engineering in strategic discussions, collaborate with Architecture and senior stakeholders, and build alignment across technical functions.
- Comfortable influencing without formal authority.
- Effective collaboration with Data Scientists, ML Engineers, Product partners, and other engineering teams.
- Ability to connect technical decisions to business value and translate complex data and domain requirements into practical, scalable solutions.
- Experience working with finance, credit, or commercial real estate data is an asset.
- Comfort working through complex, evolving problems in an environment where platforms, products, and technologies are being brought together and reimagined.
