January is a fintech company transforming consumer credit collections by personalizing interactions and optimizing decisions across the credit lifecycle. The company has serviced over $20 billion in debt across 20+ million consumers and uses AI to make financial hardship more human rather than stripping humanity from the process.
As People Strategy & Operations Lead, you will build the systems, programs, and infrastructure that enable January to scale without compromising employee experience. You own the operating foundation of the people function, treating process as the product and serving as a force multiplier across HR operations.
You will own the complete employee lifecycle from offer acceptance through exit, including onboarding, performance cycles, compensation cycles, leaves, accommodations, and visa casework. You'll design repeatable programs for key moments with clear owners, timelines, and success metrics. You'll operate performance and compensation cycles as cross-functional programs with defined milestones and stakeholder alignment, and execute offboarding while advising managers through involuntary terminations.
You'll run HR operations with program-owner rigor: managing compliance, benefits and open enrollment, immigration and visa casework, leave and accommodations, biweekly payroll, HR technology and vendor relationships. You'll invest in automation and self-service systems that reduce manual work and scale with company growth.
You'll own people data and analytics to continuously improve employee experience: building trusted reporting and actionable insights across HRIS, payroll, and employee data; defining success metrics for key people programs; and using trends to identify opportunities and inform decisions.
The role requires someone who reads messy, high-stakes situations and reaches the right call without a clean rule to point to. You think in systems and tradeoffs, scope ambiguous cross-functional problems, and drive them to shipped outcomes. You shift registers fluidly—warm first contact on day one, steady presence in hard conversations, plain-English translator between anxious employees and legal fine print. You know when a call is yours to make versus when it needs escalation, and you escalate deliberately through the right channel. You get technical details exactly right on work with legal exposure (visa classifications, leave calculations, filing deadlines). You pick up unowned work and carry it to real outcomes, leaving behind processes your successor can run without you. You build collaborative relationships with Legal, IT, Finance, and outside counsel, knowing exactly where HR's authority ends. You're data-fluent, defining metrics, building dashboards, and turning HRIS and payroll data into actionable recommendations. You surface gaps before anyone asks—missed filings, stalled cases, tickets with wrong owners. You hear what people actually need underneath what they're asking for and fix the system, not just the instance.
January operates with decentralization over control, speed over perfection, candor over comfort, and writing over average meetings. AI runs through everything. The company operates at every altitude—leaders get into trenches to learn ground truth, then refine information flows. The team builds in person at least three days per week in the Nolita office in NYC, with a growing group coming in daily.
