Oyster is a global employment platform enabling companies to hire, pay, and support talent anywhere in the world. This Payroll Specialist role is based in Portugal and offers real ownership over Portuguese payroll operations at scale.
You will run the complete Portuguese payroll cycle end-to-end, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness. Core responsibilities include processing and validating employee master data (new hires, terminations, salary changes, variable pay, benefits including meal vouchers, absences, and garnishments); executing pre- and post-payroll validations each cycle; handling all statutory filings including monthly IRS withholding declarations (DMR filings to Segurança Social) and annual Modelo 10 filings; managing subsídio de doença and parental reimbursement claims; and maintaining employee IRS withholding codes. You'll follow established procedures using Cegid (Primavera or PHC) and/or Sendys systems, test legislative updates, and flag issues to leadership or the product team.
Additional responsibilities include reconciling payroll journals and GL mappings, handling assigned client payroll tickets with a customer-first mindset, preparing statutory and ad-hoc reports (including EU Pay Transparency Directive and GDPR compliance documentation), supporting internal and external audits, and contributing to team knowledge bases and SOPs. You'll develop working knowledge of Portuguese wage tax, social insurance, and labor law (Direito Fiscal, Direito da Segurança Social, Direito do Trabalho, and Contrato Coletivo de Trabalho).
Minimum requirements: 1–3 years of hands-on native Portuguese payroll processing experience with a defined monthly volume; proficiency with Cegid (Primavera or PHC) and/or Sendys; a recognized accounting/payroll qualification (e.g., Contabilista Certificado) or dedicated payroll certification; working knowledge of Portuguese tax, social insurance, and labor law; Portuguese at C1/C2 level for local authority interaction and fluent English for async global collaboration; and a detail-oriented, careful mindset with strong client service orientation.
