Customer.io is a messaging and engagement platform used by over 9,000 companies to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS daily. The company is building a new business line around AI-native ecosystems—platforms like Vercel, Cursor, Lovable, Bolt, and others that are becoming the default starting point for software creation.
You will own the end-to-end strategy and execution of Customer.io's integration into AI builder platforms and their marketplaces. This is a hybrid business development and technical integration role that sits at the intersection of partnership negotiation and product shipping.
Key responsibilities:
- Identify and prioritize which AI builder platforms are worth partnering with, working cross-functionally with Engineering, Design, and Product to assess technical feasibility and distribution potential.
- Own the full partner relationship lifecycle: outbound prospecting, negotiation of commercial terms (revenue share, co-marketing, marketplace listing requirements), and ongoing management through shipped integration.
- Translate each marketplace's technical requirements into a spec and work hands-on with engineering to scope and ship integrations. You won't write code yourself, but you must be fluent enough to unblock technical work.
- Get Customer.io listed, verified, and ideally featured in each platform's marketplace or directory, managing the relationship as requirements evolve.
- Optimize existing integrations (Claude, ChatGPT, MCP discoverability) and ensure Customer.io shows up when AI tools recommend a messaging platform.
- Track installs, activations, and pipeline sourced from each marketplace; report on which partnerships drive real usage versus which need renegotiation.
- Build the playbook as you go—create repeatable criteria, technical requirements checklists, and deal templates so new platforms can be evaluated and onboarded quickly.
This is a land-grab opportunity: AI builder platforms are forming their partner programs and technical standards now, and early positioning will be critical for distribution.
Requirements:
- 5-7 years in business development, partnerships, or platform/ecosystem roles, ideally with developer tools, API-first, or marketplace-driven products. Experience shipping a product into a marketplace or app store (Shopify App Store, Salesforce AppExchange, Zapier, Segment Connections, or comparable) is highly valued.
- Real technical fluency: ability to read API and webhook documentation, understand OAuth and auth scopes, discuss CLI tooling, and hold your own in scoping conversations with engineers.
- Strong deal-making instincts; comfortable structuring revenue share, co-marketing, and referral agreements, and negotiating directly with partner and BD counterparts.
- Bias to action in undefined categories; these marketplaces and rules are new and changing monthly.
- Understanding of self-serve, product-led growth motions and positioning to small business end-customers rather than enterprise buyers.
- Based in North America.
- Excellent cross-functional operator; you'll work closely with product, engineering, marketing, and legal.
