The Ocean Planning Manager role is a people-leadership position responsible for building and scaling Flexport's ocean freight planning and booking operations in the Asia-Pacific region. You will hire, coach, and develop a 5–10 person team of planning and booking experts who manage end-to-end ocean freight shipments (FCL and LCL, imports and exports, including intermodal movements). Your team will be accountable for meeting OKRs and SLAs while maintaining high operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.
Key responsibilities include:
**Team Leadership:** Recruit and onboard planning and booking specialists; provide coaching, performance management, and career development; establish training programs; and maintain team motivation around strategic initiatives.
**Planning & Booking Operations:** Oversee execution of ocean freight planning and booking across all service types; optimize allocation and shipping order utilization; design scalable operational procedures and infrastructure; and manage the Fulfilment Management Tool (FMT) while supporting product enhancements.
**Partner & Stakeholder Management:** Serve as the primary relationship manager for internal teams (Account Management, Ocean Execution, Allocation, Procurement) and external partners (ocean carriers, intermodal providers, drayage vendors, terminals, subcontractors); handle major carrier and client escalations; maintain long-term carrier relationships across sales, booking, customer service, and documentation functions; and collaborate on carrier strategy and revenue optimization.
**Strategic Initiatives:** Contribute to the design of Flexport's next operational model, balancing tactical execution with adaptive leadership in a complex, fast-moving freight forwarding environment.
This is a hands-on management role that requires deep operational knowledge of ocean logistics, strong people leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to scale processes as the business grows.
