Salary: USD 110,000 - 135,000 / annual
CQ Roll Call, part of FiscalNote, is seeking an experienced Managing Editor to direct coverage of the interaction among the executive, judicial, and legislative branches of the U.S. federal government. This is a leadership role within a respected Washington journalism operation that combines two quality media brands with a strong history of political and policy reporting.
In this position, you will manage a team of editors and reporters focused on the three branches of government and political campaigns. You will be responsible for generating distinctive story ideas, identifying trends, leveraging data, and producing content across multiple platforms including CQ Magazine, CQ website, Roll Call newspaper, newsletters, and digital channels. You will work to inspire reporters to produce high-impact, enterprising stories about the relationship between the White House and Congress, the judicial branch's effect on federal governance, and the influential groups and advocates seeking to shape policy.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing a team of editors and their reporters across legislative, executive, and judicial coverage areas
- Determining editorial content strategy for CQ products (magazine, newsletters, website) and Roll Call (newspaper, website, newsletters)
- Coordinating with other managing editors and assignment editors to ensure editorial vision is executed across all platforms
- Providing regular feedback, coaching, and mentoring to direct reports and newsroom staff
- Writing and editing content as needed, including second edits for team coverage
- Editing columnists and newsletters
- Moderating panel discussions, webinars, podcasts, and corporate events
You should be comfortable with the details of White House and congressional news, sourcing, and court cases with significant political and policy implications. The role requires daily reporting from Capitol Hill and is based in Washington, DC.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field
- 10+ years of work experience in daily journalism, preferably focused on policy and political stories about the federal government
- 3+ years in management roles with increasing levels of responsibility
- Experience working in a newsroom in an editor role
- Knowledge of CQ and Roll Call systems and processes
- Four (4) published writing samples from newspapers, news websites, or news magazines demonstrating reporting and writing ability required at application
