Remote is a global HR-tech platform enabling organizations to recruit, pay, and manage international teams across 90+ jurisdictions compliantly. The company is seeking a Managing Counsel, Product to serve as a legal partner to Payroll, Product, Engineering, Privacy, and Security teams, with emphasis on payroll compliance and AI/ML features. In this individual contributor role, you will deliver pragmatic and innovative legal solutions that protect Remote from unacceptable risk while enabling product velocity. Key responsibilities include: end-to-end payroll and AI product counseling (launch readiness, impact assessments, model cards, risk controls); collaboration with Commercial Legal on product T&Cs and AI-specific clauses; proactive monitoring of emerging AI and tech regulations and translation into actionable product requirements; management of external counsel on complex multi-jurisdictional issues; targeted enablement through trainings and office hours; partnership with Privacy & Security on DPIAs, TIAs, incident response, and vendor/LLM diligence; and problem-solving on complex matters rather than escalation. You bring extensive experience as a qualified lawyer with proven product counsel expertise in HR tech (Payroll/PEO/EOR) across multiple jurisdictions. Deep expertise in AI frameworks (EU AI Act, UK approach, US state/federal developments, Canada AIDA) and their interplay with data protection (GDPR/CCPA), employment law, and payroll compliance is essential. In-house legal experience and startup experience are bonuses. You are tech-savvy, passionate about HR tech, analytically strong, fluent in English, and comfortable with tools like Claude, Slack, Notion, and Google Drive. Ideally, you have shipped at least one AI feature in production and built the accompanying legal/governance framework.
