Remote is a global HR-tech platform enabling organizations to recruit, pay, and manage international teams compliantly across 90+ jurisdictions. The company is seeking a Managing Counsel, Product—an individual contributor role—to serve as a legal partner to Payroll, Product, Engineering, Privacy, and Security teams.
You will deliver pragmatic and innovative legal solutions protecting Remote from unacceptable risk while enabling product velocity. Your focus will be payroll compliance and AI/ML features, translating complex multi-jurisdictional rules into clear, shippable requirements and balancing compliance with commerciality.
Key responsibilities include: end-to-end payroll and AI product counseling (launch readiness, impact assessments, model cards, risk controls); collaborating with Commercial Legal on product T&Cs and AI-specific clauses; proactively monitoring new AI and tech regulations and translating them into actionable steps for product, design, and engineering teams; managing external counsel on complex multi-jurisdictional issues; delivering targeted enablement (trainings, office hours); partnering with Privacy & Security on DPIAs, TIAs, incident response, and vendor/LLM diligence; and solving complex matters rather than escalating.
You are a seasoned, qualified lawyer with extensive product counseling experience in technology, proven expertise in HR tech (Payroll/PEO/EOR), and a track record advising at scale across multiple jurisdictions. Deep expertise in AI frameworks (EU AI Act, UK approach, U.S. state/federal developments, Canada AIDA) and their interplay with data protection (GDPR/CCPA), employment law, and payroll compliance is essential. In-house legal experience and startup experience are bonuses. You are tech-savvy, passionate about HR tech products, fluent in English, and comfortable with tools like Claude, Slack, Notion, and Google Drive.
