Remote is a global HR-tech platform enabling organizations to recruit, pay, and manage international teams compliantly across 90+ jurisdictions. The company is seeking a Managing Counsel, Product—a senior individual contributor lawyer to serve as legal partner to Payroll, Product, Engineering, Privacy, and Security teams.
You will deliver pragmatic, innovative legal solutions protecting Remote from unacceptable risk while enabling product velocity. Key responsibilities include: end-to-end payroll and AI product counseling (launch readiness, impact assessments, model cards, risk controls); collaboration with Commercial Legal on product T&Cs and AI-specific clauses; proactive monitoring of emerging AI and tech regulations (EU AI Act, UK approach, US/Canada frameworks) and translation into actionable product requirements; management of external counsel on complex multi-jurisdictional matters; targeted enablement (trainings, office hours); partnership with Privacy & Security on DPIAs, TIAs, incident response, and vendor/LLM diligence; and problem-solving on complex matters rather than escalation.
Required qualifications: seasoned lawyer with extensive product counseling experience (jurisdiction-agnostic; multiple bars a plus); proven expertise in HR tech (Payroll/PEO/EOR) advising at scale across multiple jurisdictions; deep expertise in AI frameworks (EU AI Act, UK approach, US state/federal, Canada AIDA) and their interplay with data protection (GDPR/CCPA), employment law, and payroll compliance; excellent analytical and organizational skills; fluent English; tech-savvy with modern collaboration tools (Claude, Slack, Notion, Google Drive).
Bonus qualifications: in-house legal experience; startup experience; AI/ML legal and compliance background in HR tech or payroll; shipped AI features in production with accompanying legal/governance frameworks; deep multi-jurisdictional payroll compliance knowledge; remote work experience.
Reports to Managing Counsel, Product and Commercial within the Legal team. This is an individual contributor role (not managing people) with emphasis on payroll and AI/ML features.
