Shield AI is seeking a Manager of Software Engineering to build and lead the Shared Services Engineering team. This role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, requiring you to hire, coach, and develop engineers while defining and executing the team's roadmap.
You will partner closely with product and engineering teams to identify shared capabilities, establish clear ownership boundaries, and guide strategic initiatives including shared authentication, telemetry integrations, the Customer Support Portal, and future public telemetry APIs. Your responsibilities include leading the architecture, delivery, and operation of shared services, SDKs, APIs, and customer-facing systems that serve both internal engineering teams and external customers.
Key responsibilities include establishing secure, reliable, documented, and versioned interfaces; communicating plans, progress, risks, and tradeoffs across engineering, product, and organizational leadership; and balancing customer needs, cross-product priorities, operational health, and long-term technical investment.
Required: 7+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated management of engineers responsible for production software. You should have strong technical judgment in full-stack applications, backend services, APIs, or distributed systems; strategic systems thinking to turn recurring needs into reusable capabilities; a track record of setting technical direction and executing across immediate and long-term priorities; and effective cross-functional leadership skills.
Preferred qualifications include experience leading teams building shared services and customer-facing applications from scratch through production; depth in identity/authentication, public APIs/SDKs, or OpenTelemetry; experience establishing new engineering capabilities or driving adoption across product teams; and experience in regulated or compliance-driven environments.
