Salary: USD 145,000 - 160,000 / annual
Tomorrow.io's R&D team is seeking a Machine Learning Scientist to advance next-generation weather forecasting capabilities. You will combine atmospheric science expertise with state-of-the-art machine learning to improve forecast skill and develop novel approaches to leverage observations from Tomorrow.io's microwave sounder satellite constellation.
Key responsibilities include: conducting research and development at the intersection of machine learning and weather prediction; developing, training, evaluating, and improving AI-based weather prediction models with focus on measurable forecast improvements; exploring ML approaches for incorporating satellite observations into forecast systems, including ML-based data assimilation; working with large atmospheric and geophysical datasets to build reproducible, maintainable ML workflows; collaborating with scientists and engineers to transition research from proof-of-concept into scalable operational systems; and communicating results through internal reviews, technical discussions, and peer-reviewed publications.
Required qualifications: graduate degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, computer science, or related quantitative field; 2+ years developing machine learning approaches for weather prediction or closely related geoscience problems (relevant PhD research counts); hands-on experience training and evaluating deep learning models for atmospheric science; strong understanding of ML development best practices including experimental design, model evaluation, testing, and code review; strong written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines; and evidence of independent research through publications, research leadership, or open-source contributions.
Desirable qualifications include: knowledge of data assimilation (traditional and/or ML-based); satellite remote sensing experience; production-quality scientific or ML software development; familiarity with modern weather/geoscience ML architectures (graph neural networks, transformers); and AI-first development mentality.
