Salary: USD 385,000 - 460,000 / annual
Anthropic's Legal team is seeking an experienced litigator to join the Litigation and Regulatory team. You will manage a broad docket of litigation matters with significant autonomy, advise company leadership on litigation risk, and help build systems and processes to support a growing litigation function at scale.
You will handle matters spanning intellectual property (particularly copyright), class actions, commercial disputes, securities and shareholder disputes, and regulatory investigations in both first-party and third-party contexts, domestically and internationally. You will partner closely with colleagues across Legal and throughout the company to resolve matters strategically with minimal business disruption.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing a diverse range of litigation matters including IP, class actions, regulatory disputes, and securities cases
- Directing outside counsel across all litigation stages from pre-suit through discovery, briefing, trial, resolution, and appeal, with focus on strategic decision-making and legal writing
- Managing smaller disputes and escalations to minimize business friction and risk
- Advising company leadership and cross-functional partners on litigation risk and developing strategic litigation plans
- Designing and implementing processes, policies, and tools for efficient matter management at scale (intake, budgeting, contingency reporting, escalation procedures)
- Gathering information efficiently and evaluating risk across the organization
- Supporting responses to regulatory investigations and inquiries
- Staying current on relevant laws, litigation trends, and AI-related case law
- Mentoring and developing team members through hands-on work on active matters
The role is based in San Francisco with an expectation to be in the office at least 3 days per week.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
- JD and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California preferred)
- Litigation experience with copyright, class action, securities, and/or regulatory matters
- Broad experience handling complex civil litigation with deep knowledge of litigation practice, procedure, discovery, and federal and/or California state court rules
- Demonstrated ability to manage litigation matters with significant independence, including case strategy, discovery management, legal brief writing, and outside counsel direction
- Clear writing and communication skills, with ability to explain litigation risk and strategy to non-legal audiences at all levels
- Poise and judgment under pressure while balancing legal risk with business priorities
Preferred:
- At least 12 years of litigation experience combining global law firm and in-house experience
- Experience representing technology companies, particularly those in emerging technologies
- Experience building systems, processes, or tools for in-house legal teams (matter management, budgeting, reporting)
- Experience managing regulatory responses and investigations (first-party and third-party)
- Creativity and openness to novel solutions
- Ability to think and work quickly with flexible risk tolerance and good humor
- Low ego and willingness to roll up sleeves on problems ranging from mundane to complex
- Collaborative approach with legal colleagues, outside counsel, and business partners
- Genuine interest in developing AI that is both innovative and trustworthy
