Salary: USD 335,000 - 385,000 / annual
Anthropic is seeking its first dedicated Life Sciences Counsel to serve as a strategic legal partner to the company's biomedical research and development initiatives. This is a high-impact, embedded legal role with unusual scope for a single attorney.
You will work closely with Anthropic's life sciences research teams to provide counsel on complex research, development, and commercial matters globally. Key responsibilities include:
• Serving as a key strategic advisor on complex research, development, and commercial matters
• Driving high deal volume with life science and biopharma counterparties across sophisticated agreement types
• Identifying, analyzing, and proactively managing life science regulatory risks in coordination with the broader Legal department
• Designing and implementing scalable guidance and processes to support fast-growing life science efforts
• Anticipating emerging legal developments affecting AI technologies in life science and biopharma spaces
You must have a JD and active bar membership (California or New York preferred). Deep fluency in life sciences industry operations is essential—understanding drug development, research organization structures, pharmaceutical and biotech counterparty priorities, and the regulatory environment (GxP, clinical data regulations, human-subjects research, FDA processes).
Required experience includes negotiating and drafting complex IP allocation issues in multi-party research arrangements, managing outside counsel across specialties (FDA/regulatory, IP, privacy, export control), and translating legal risk into practical guidance for scientists and business partners.
Preferred qualifications include 10+ years of relevant legal experience with substantial life sciences transactional work (contract research, strategic collaborations, licensing, commercialization), experience with AI/ML companies in regulated scientific/clinical settings (particularly drug discovery), familiarity with biosecurity and export control, and scientific or technical training.
The role requires in-office presence at least 3 days per week in New York.
