Column is a developer-first bank and financial infrastructure platform founded in 2019 by veterans from Plaid, Square, Meta, Blend, and Affirm. The company simplifies fintech banking by combining banking and software capabilities, eliminating the traditional complex supply chain of vendors and middleware.
Column is seeking its first Legal Operations hire to transform the Legal function into a competitive advantage. This is a high-ownership, hands-on role reporting directly to the General Counsel, requiring someone who has built or significantly transformed a Legal Ops function at a high-growth tech company or financial institution.
Key responsibilities include:
**Building the Legal Operating Model**: Assess current operations, define target operating model, and build operational cadences (intake SLAs, approval gates, cross-functional handoffs). Develop KPIs, dashboards, and reporting mechanisms for team performance, deal volume, cycle times, and operational health. Identify bottlenecks and implement scalable process improvements.
**Legal Technology & AI**: Audit existing tools, identify gaps, and develop a comprehensive legal technology roadmap covering intake/workflow, CLM, e-billing, knowledge management, and AI-assisted workflows. Design and build AI-assisted and agentic workflows using the Bank's tools to create custom dashboards, playbooks, redlining tools, and databases. Partner with Business Operations to drive tech-forward approach. Own adoption, training, and change management.
**Contract Lifecycle & Knowledge Management**: Own legal side of CLM including intake, routing, templates, repository, and reporting. Design and run legal intake/triage workflow with continuous improvement. Maintain playbooks, briefs, and templates as source of truth. Develop documentation management and retention processes.
**Outside Counsel & Financial Operations**: Manage outside counsel operations and legal budget. Review and enforce billing guidelines, audit spend, and drive cost rigor. Collaborate with Finance on budgeting and forecasting. Develop frameworks for firm/vendor selection and performance management.
The role is in-person at Column's Presidio-based San Francisco office 3-4 days per week. The ideal candidate has 7+ years in legal operations at high-growth tech or financial institutions, a builder's mentality with AI-native approach, creativity in designing custom solutions, hands-on CLM and knowledge management experience, and strong data/analytics skills.
