Wordsmith is a legal operating system for in-house legal teams, used by 500+ companies including Financial Times, Canva, and Starling. The company is backed by $100M+ from Index Ventures and General Catalyst and is building one of the defining platforms in legal AI.
You will be the first Legal Engineer hired to build out privacy and compliance as a brand-new product vertical from the ground up. This role spans privacy law, regulatory compliance, and governance—translating complex legal requirements into structured, AI-executable solutions.
Key responsibilities:
- Build privacy and compliance products by converting messy legal and regulatory requirements into workable solutions that AI agents can execute
- Own the product vertical with real autonomy over architecture, roadmap, and execution
- Support pre-sales by sitting with customers, understanding their privacy and compliance challenges, and demonstrating or building tailored solutions
- Apply deep knowledge of privacy law and the broader compliance landscape (AI governance, financial services, employment law, security frameworks) to real customer problems
- Extend into adjacent legal work as needed, beyond core privacy and compliance
- Build solutions using Wordsmith's own platform—no coding required, but hands-on AI literacy essential
You should have several years of experience in privacy law or compliance practice at a mid-to-senior level, with either a law qualification or deep specialist credentials. Strong AI literacy is essential—you must be comfortable reasoning about what today's AI can and cannot do. A builder's mindset is critical: you can take messy requirements and structure them into workable solutions. Client-facing confidence is required; you'll sit in front of customers and demonstrate solutions in pre- and post-sales contexts.
Desirable: legal tech or RegTech experience, breadth across compliance landscapes (ISO 27001, SOC 2, EU AI Act), exposure to broader legal practice, or hands-on building experience with prompt design or low-code tools.
The team is based in Edinburgh or London, with in-office as the default working model. You'll work closely with Sales, Product, and Engineering, with meaningful autonomy to scope problems and build solutions.
