The company powers digital checkout experiences for major brands including eBay, Spotify, Klarna, Uber, and Sony, with 20 offices across six continents and London as headquarters.
We are seeking a Legal Counsel with strong regulatory and product advisory expertise to join our expanding Legal team in Singapore. This role sits at the intersection of regulatory compliance, product strategy, and business expansion, supporting Checkout.com's rapid growth across multiple jurisdictions.
Key responsibilities include:
- Advising on compliance with financial services and payments regulations across different jurisdictions
- Managing regulator relationships on license-related matters and regulatory strategy
- Supporting product and service launches with legal and regulatory guidance
- Evaluating new market expansion opportunities, researching territories, and managing license applications or scope expansions
- Advising on broader regulatory requirements applicable to financial institutions, including group-level regulatory change projects
- Communicating new regulatory developments to business functions and assessing impact on operations, products, and contracts
- Managing a diverse, high-priority workload with minimal supervision while demonstrating critical judgment and agility
The successful candidate will work collaboratively across the business, providing pragmatic, commercially focused legal advice and creative risk-management solutions. This is an opportunity to work on complex cross-border matters, deepen expertise in payments law and fintech regulation, and play a key role in supporting the company's international growth.
The team operates on a hybrid model with three days per week in the Singapore office to support collaboration.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Qualified solicitor or lawyer with 3–7 years post-qualification experience (PQE), either in-house or private practice
- Strong understanding of payments law, the payments ecosystem, and regulatory/licensing strategy and execution
- Strong understanding of broader financial institution regulatory requirements
- Excellent time management and ability to manage diverse workloads and competing stakeholder demands
- Ability to handle and deliver on multiple high-priority projects concurrently
- Comfortable with ambiguity, constant change, and fast-paced environments
- Practical, solutions-oriented approach to legal challenges
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively as needed
- Strong communication skills; ability to articulate and explain complex legal issues clearly and concisely
- Enthusiasm for new challenges and learning different areas of law
VALUE ADDS:
- Previous fintech, start-up, payments, or financial institution experience
- Experience in fast-paced, dynamic environments
- International experience and cross-border matter expertise
- Additional language skills (e.g., Japanese)
