OpenFX is building infrastructure to enable cross-border payments at scale, moving money as freely as data across time zones and legacy systems. As Legal Counsel, you will serve as a strategic legal advisor across the business with particular focus on licensing (MiCAR/PSD2), financial product development, and financial partnerships. This role combines navigating cutting-edge fintech regulation with shaping legal strategy at a high-growth company.
Key responsibilities include:
**Product Legal**: Advise product and engineering teams on legal and regulatory aspects of payment and banking product design, development, and launch. Translate complex regulatory requirements into clear guidance enabling rapid, compliant product development.
**Regulatory & Licensing Strategy**: Partner with business and compliance teams to develop and execute licensing and market entry strategies across EU and UK markets. Provide forward-thinking guidance on payments, money transmission, cryptocurrency, foreign exchange, and cross-border transaction regulations. Identify regulatory risks and develop pragmatic mitigation solutions.
**Corporate & General Legal**: Provide comprehensive legal support across corporate governance, board matters, employment/HR, privacy, IP, fundraising, strategic transactions, and general corporate needs. Assess legal and business risks organization-wide.
**Cross-Functional Partnership**: Serve as strategic business partner to leadership, product, engineering, and growth teams. Manage external counsel efficiently. Build scalable legal processes supporting rapid growth.
Required qualifications: 7+ years legal experience (in-house or private practice), excellent academic credentials with top-tier law firm training, fintech/financial institution advisory experience, strong knowledge of financial services and payments regulations (MiCAR, PSD2, EMD, Dutch Financial Supervision Act, AML), proven ability to balance risk with commercial objectives, collaborative work style, analytical problem-solving, excellent communication, self-starter mentality, strong project management.
Desirable: cryptocurrency or BaaS product experience, startup/high-growth company background, international regulatory and cross-border transaction expertise.
